Planning a trip to Kyrgyzstan? Before you pack your bags, it’s important to understand how to get a Kyrgyzstan visa. This guide walks you through the step-by-step process, from determining if you need a visa to submitting your application
Step 1: Do You Need To Get A Visa for Kyrgyzstan?
Citizens from approximately 60 countries, can enter Kyrgyzstan without a visa. To check your country’s specific requirements, visit the official Kyrgyzstan visa portal and navigate to the “Do I Need a Visa?” section. If you are not allowed to enter Kyrgyzstan visa-free you’ll need to apply.
Step 2: Staying Longer Than 60 Days Or Unsupported Passport
If you intend to stay in Kyrgyzstan for more than 60 days or your passport isn’t part of the visa-free network, you’ll need to apply for a visa. A crucial part of the application is obtaining an official invitation letter from a licensed tourist agency, company, or government office.
Step 3: Types of Kyrgyzstan Visas You Can Apply For
The most common visa for tourists is the Sapar visa, which is typically straightforward to obtain with the proper documentation. Other visa types include religious and digital nomad visas, catering to specific travel purposes.
Step 4: Obtain the Invitation Letter
To apply for a visa, you’ll need an invitation letter. For instance, I contacted Apple Hostel in Bishkek, to request a letter. They charged $40 for the service, required a scan of my passport, and provided the letter after a few days. This letter is essential for your visa application.

With your invitation letter in hand, visit the Kyrgyzstan Visa Application website. You’ll need to provide personal details, including your purpose of travel, date of birth, passport information, and details of your inviting party. Ensure you upload the following documents:
- A scanned copy of your invitation letter.
- A clear passport photo that meets Kyrgyzstan’s photo requirements.
- A scanned copy of your passport.
Step 6: Submit Your Documents
After uploading your documents, double-check that all files are correctly displayed on the preview page. If anything is missing or incorrectly uploaded, you may receive an email from the visa services team indicating which document needs to be fixed.
Step 7: Addressing Application Rejections
If your application is rejected, don’t be discouraged. You’ll typically receive feedback within 24 hours via email explaining the issue. It could be something as simple as an incorrectly cropped photo or a document that wasn’t properly uploaded.
Step 8: Await Visa Approval
Once all your documents are uploaded and accepted, it usually takes 1 to 2 weeks to receive your visa approval. In my case, I received my approval in 10 days. The approval will come via email, and you’ll need to print this visa and bring it with you when you travel to Kyrgyzstan.

- Duration of Stay: Visa applications for stays longer than 3 months are typically denied unless you’re traveling for government-related purposes. As a tourist, applying for a visa with a duration of 3 months or less increases your chances of approval.
- Photo Requirements: You’ll need to submit a photo as part of your application to get a Kyrgyzstan visa. For me, this was the most challenging step—I had my photo rejected eight times before it was finally approved. There isn’t much clear guidance online about the exact specifications, apart from a few reference images shared on the Kyrgyz visa center’s Instagram page. The best solution I found was to use a visa photo app. These apps are designed for official applications and automatically adjust the background, dimensions, and size to match the Kyrgyzstan visa requirements. It only cost me around $5, and after that, my photo was accepted without any issues.
- Confirmation Code: The website will prompt you to enter a confirmation code when moving through the application process. I’m not sure where to get this code but you have the option of ask for a secondary code via email. Just press the send code to email button. You will need to ask for a code every time you go on the website.
- Document Upload: The document upload process for the Kyrgyzstan visa can be tricky. After my photo was first rejected, I had to resubmit it seven more times before it was finally approved. The problem wasn’t the photo itself after the second attempt—it was the upload process. Here’s the key: the visa application website changes slightly after your first submission. If you receive an “incomplete visa application” email, don’t panic. Simply log back into your application—either through the link in the email or by going to the official Kyrgyzstan visa website and selecting “View Status.” From there, you’ll be taken to the documents page. Attach your missing document, press Upload/Add, and then continue to the preview page to confirm everything is correct.
- Inviting Organization: On page 2 of the application, ensure you select “inviting organization” rather than “inviting person” if you received the letter from a hostel or tourism agency. This option is available under the applicant bubble at the top of the page.

Navigating official customer service channels can be challenging. Despite numerous attempts, I was unable to establish contact with any of the listed visa support resources. In an effort to obtain accurate information, I even reached out to all four border control stations. Unfotunaely, none were able to provide any substantive assistance. The most helpful resource was the Consular Department’s 24/7 hotline but even then, don’t expect much.
