You’ve booked your flight to Bishkek, reserved a cozy yurt on the shores of Issyk-Kul Lake, and lined up a horseback trek to Song-Kul’s alpine vistas. The only thing left? Packing.

Kyrgyzstan’s landscapes range from lush valleys to snow-dusted peaks. This means being prepared for shifting weather is key. Here’s what to bring for every season — from summer swims to winter slopes.

Summer

June – September

Summer is the most popular time to visit Kyrgyzstan, especially for trekking, horseback riding, and camping. Bishkek can get hot, with daily highs in the 30s and occasional spikes over 40 celsius.

Issyk-Kul Lake (a must-see for any visitor) offers a refreshing escape from the heat. Don’t forget your swimsuit! Despite its name meaning “warm lake,” Issyk-Kul’s alpine waters can be quite cool. The name actually comes from the fact that the lake never freezes, thanks to its depth and salinity.

Summer is also prime yurt season. Even though many yurts have stoves inside, nights can get chilly, especially at higher elevations like Song-Kul Lake, so bring warm layers.

Packing tips for summer:

  • Light, breathable shirts and shorts
  • A warm fleece or light jacket for evenings
  • Swimwear and sandals
  • Hiking boots or sturdy sneakers
  • Quick-dry pants or leggings
  • Sunhat, sunglasses, and sunscreen

Pro tip: Dress in layers year-round in Kyrgyzstan. Temperatures can change dramatically between sun-soaked valleys and mountain passes.

Fall and Spring

September – November / March – May

Early autumn and late spring are ideal for mild weather and fewer crowds. In September and early October, Bishkek enjoys comfortable highs in the 20s, perfect for eating outdoors in the city’s many cafés and terraces.

At Issyk-Kul, nights can drop close to freezing, so pack warm clothing. Most yurt camps close by October, but it’s still a great time for hiking. Ala-Archa National Park, about 40–50 minutes from Bishkek, is especially beautiful in autumn with its colorful foliage and relatively low elevation.

Spring brings budding wildflowers and clear mountain air, though weather can be unpredictable: sunny one day, snowy the next.

Packing tips for fall and spring:

  • Midweight jacket or fleece
  • Long-sleeve shirts and layers
  • Comfortable jeans or trekking pants
  • Waterproof outer shell or rain jacket
  • Hiking shoes or boots
  • Gloves and hat for chilly evenings

Winter

December – February

Winter in Kyrgyzstan brings crisp mountain air and fantastic skiing. The country is quickly becoming a sought-after winter destination, with several ski resorts to choose from.

Karakol Ski Resort, on Issyk-Kul’s eastern shore, offers well-groomed runs and stunning views, with one traveler even comparing it to Lake Louise Ski Resort in Canada. Closer to Bishkek, Chunkurchak Ski Resort is a convenient option for a quick getaway.

Bishkek regularly dips below freezing, while areas around Issyk-Kul can reach -30, so pack accordingly.

Packing tips for winter:

  • Thermal base layers
  • Insulated jacket or parka
  • Waterproof snow boots
  • Gloves, hat, and scarf
  • Thick socks
  • Sunglasses (for bright mountain sun)
